Pets: The Innocent Victims

Thousands of animals have become homeless as a result of the subprime mortgage crisis. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them will be put down.

The Humane Society and other animal shelters are reporting a dramatic increase in the number of pets being brought to their facilities by homeowners who are being forced to move to places where they cannot take their animal companions.

"It's a very unfortunate problem, and it will only get worse before it gets better," Humane Society Executive Director Steve McNall told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

And some pet owners aren't even taking the trouble to bring their pets in themselves. The shelters are receiving the majority of the calls from realtors who are trying to move a vacant house only to find an animal left behind.

If you know that you're going to have to move out of your house, take the time to find a safe place for your animal companions.
